Installing an AC with undersized wiring or an incorrect MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker) is the leading cause of electrical fires in commercial and residential properties across India.

1. Understanding Full Load Amps (FLA) vs LRA

To size wires, you must read the compressor nameplate:

• FLA (Full Load Amps) / RLA (Running Load Amps): The current the AC draws while running normally.
• LRA (Locked Rotor Amps): The massive spike of current (often 3x to 5x the FLA) drawn for a split second when the compressor motor first starts.

2. Standard Wire Sizing for Split ACs (Copper Wire)

Using standard multistrand copper wiring in Indian conditions (230V Single Phase):

• 1.0 Ton AC (Approx 4-5 Amps): 1.5 sq mm copper wire. 16 Amp MCB (C-Curve).
• 1.5 Ton AC (Approx 6-8 Amps): 2.5 sq mm copper wire. 16 Amp to 20 Amp MCB (C-Curve).
• 2.0 Ton AC (Approx 9-11 Amps): 2.5 sq mm to 4.0 sq mm copper wire. 20 Amp to 25 Amp MCB (C-Curve).

3. Why C-Curve Breakers are Mandatory

Never use a standard B-Curve MCB for an air conditioner. B-Curve breakers trip very quickly on mild current spikes. A compressor's high LRA (starting current) will falsely trip a B-Curve breaker. C-Curve MCBs are designed to tolerate motor starting surges for a few seconds without tripping.

Field Safety Tip

Never oversize a breaker. Putting a 32-Amp MCB on a 1.5-ton AC means the breaker will not trip if the compressor starts drawing 20 amps due to a mechanical fault, leading to melted wires and a fire.
