The Danger of Reverse Rotation

A 3-phase scroll or screw compressor is designed to spin in one specific direction to pump refrigerant and circulate lubricating oil. If the phases are reversed (e.g., R-Y-B becomes Y-R-B), the motor spins backward.

• Scroll Compressors: Will emit a loud screaming noise and fail to pump refrigerant. If left running backward, the scroll plates will grind together and destroy the internal seals within minutes.
• Screw Compressors: Backward rotation instantly starves the bearings of oil, causing a total mechanical seizure that costs lakhs to rebuild.

Phase Loss (Single Phasing)

A phase monitoring relay also protects against phase loss. If one of the three phases drops out (e.g., a blown pole fuse), the motor will try to pull the missing power from the remaining two phases. The amperage spikes, the motor overheats, and the windings melt (motor burnout).

How the Relay Works

The relay monitors the incoming voltage sequences. If it detects a phase reversal, voltage asymmetry, or a missing phase, it instantly cuts the 24V control circuit, preventing the main contactor from engaging the compressor.
