Cooling Tower Water Treatment: Preventing Scale, Corrosion, and Legionella

An essential guide for facility managers on cooling tower water chemistry. Learn how to dose anti-scalants, prevent pipe corrosion, and control dangerous Legionella bacteria.

The Chemistry of Heat Rejection

A water-cooled chiller plant is only as reliable as its water chemistry. The cooling tower constantly evaporates water, leaving behind concentrated dissolved solids (hardness). Without proper chemical dosing, these minerals rapidly scale the chiller condenser.

In this operational guide, we cover Cooling Tower Water Treatment Programs. Prime Cool provides automated dosing systems for MIDC industrial plants.

The Three Pillars of Water Treatment

  1. Scale Inhibitors (Anti-Scalants): Chemicals that keep calcium and magnesium dissolved in the water rather than baking onto the hot copper tubes of the condenser.
  2. Corrosion Inhibitors: Oxygen-rich cooling water will rapidly rust galvanized steel and iron piping. Inhibitors form a microscopic protective film on the metal surfaces.
  3. Biocides (Algaecides): Warm, sunlit cooling tower basins breed algae and the dangerous Legionella bacteria. Automated dosing of oxidizing (chlorine/bromine) and non-oxidizing biocides is a strict health and safety requirement.

Managing the Bleed-Off (Blowdown)

Chemicals alone aren't enough. The system must automatically drain (bleed-off) a portion of the highly concentrated water and replace it with fresh make-up water to keep the TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) levels within safe operational limits.
